Belgium has top quality food and surprisingly has a growing plant-based scene. Restaurants are constantly coming out with new vegan dishes or are opening new 100% vegetarian restaurants, as trend rises. Here are some of the best restaurants you must visit as you travel around Belgium.

HART, which is Dutch for heart, is all-vegan and serves high-quality breakfast and lunch.

Lasagna for breakfast or pancakes for lunch? No problem, sir! At this recently opened (2018) brunch place in Antwerp the menu says ‘Breakfast all day’. Seriously, go try their vegan scrambled ‘eggs’, they’re wonderful! Their dishes are served as little artworks and the interior design is amazing as well.

Récollets is the place to be for classical dishes all veganized. They serve typical Belgian pastries called ‘koffiekoeken’, that are normally full of butter and eggs. Also definitely try their vegan cheese croquettes or snack mix; not many places serve these veganized. At Récollets you can also choose breakfast-combos; just like a classical breakfast, but all plant based.

Carotterie 2000 serves the best vegan sandwiches in Antwerp (or Belgium; or the world even, I think). A typical Belgian thing to eat at lunch is ‘een smoske’. Literally translated ‘a little mess’, this crispy baguette is filled with raw veggies, mayonnaise, boiled egg and meat or cheese. Carotterie 2000 leaves out the animal products and makes its own plant based cheeses that are out of this world. You can literally not taste the difference. By only using high-quality products these ‘smoskes’ are the best. Their vegan lasagna and desserts (including tiramisu and mojito cheesecake) are amazing as well.

The best all-vegan Mediterranean food is made and served by the Italian-Austrian owners of WILD project. This is the perfect place for a wholesome, delicious dinner. Their dishes are thought of as tapas to be shared.

This all-vegan bakery is located in the East of Flanders, but well-worth the detour. Their signature cinnamon rolls with toppings you can only dream of, are so delicious. Also their raw bites and carrot cakes are da bomb. And, aren’t they just beautiful?

Toppings change seasonally, yum! #givepeasachance

If you’re in Belgium and diggin’ some comfort food, you cannot avoid Belgian fries. In Belgium you get the real thing in (mostly tiny) places called ‘Frituur’, served with a wide range of sauces and meaty snacks. Of course some places do it better, like De Frietketel in Ghent, that has many vegetarian and vegan snack- and sauce-options. And the quality is superb!

Yo, meatlovers out there!

Greenway recently took its motto ‘Plant based for meat lovers’ to the next level by adding the delicious Beyond Meat Burger to their menu. This American burger is just like the real deal: it looks like meat, it bleeds like meat and it tastes like meat. Greenway serves this burger in a delicious vegan burger bun, with veganaise, vegan cheese and raw veggies. Also try their signature Kebab Wrap, it’s delicious!

This real-Italian pizza place serves delicious Neapolitan pizzas. The dough is outstanding and the ingredients very fresh. You can choose your pizza-toppings and there are vegan options available. The price is a bit higher (approx. 16 to >20 euros). The interior is not hip; it’s actually just what you expect a real Italian pizzeria to be. Just so you know, they have a Gault Millau-sign outside.

You might know Loving Hut, as it’s located in several cities in many countries. Loving Hut Veganerie is a bit more special though. Serving salads (with vegan scampis or calamari?), burgers, hotdogs and sweets. This place also has a little shop with vegan products.
